Muskrat Skull and Delphiniums
Created during the Covid lockdowns, the Beauty and Decay series began as an exploration of the many forms beauty can take throughout the natural cycle of life. Through these carefully constructed still life images, I sought to examine the relationship between fragility and permanence, life and death, and the ways seemingly opposing elements can coexist in harmony.
This horizontal composition features a muskrat skull resting on a bed of soft pink delphinium flowers against a deep black background. The stark structure of the skull stands in direct contrast to the delicate petals surrounding it, yet the two elements blend together to create a sense of balance and unexpected beauty. For me, this juxtaposition reflects the central theme of the series: that beauty can be found not only in growth and vitality, but also in transformation, impermanence, and decay.
